The following is a 2016 email answering a Southern Utah University (SUU) student's questions about studying abroad at Meiji University. I'm now posting it on this blog in the hopes of it being somewhat helpful to others. Please note, I attended Meiji University between 2015-2016 and some things could have changed since then.

Project Abstract:
I will be studying abroad in Japan for my EDGE project in an effort to learn Japanese Kanji for reading and writing. In preparation for this effort I have already began studying abroad at Meiji University in Japan since September 2015, but my actual progress towards learning Kanji will officially kick off in the spring. There are at least 2,000 Kanji characters commonly used today. My memory is terrible and I quickly forget things unless I constantly practice what I’m learning. With those considerations in mind I’m going reduce my goal of learning Kanji to at least 1,000 of them for the duration of my EDGE project. Broken down that demands that I learn at least 5 new Kanji a day from January to August while constantly refreshing my memory of those that I have already studied. The reason why I want to learn to read and write in Japanese is so that I will be able to research written works that have not been translated to English. By having this skill it will make researching substantially easier to discover and further understand Japanese opinions, accomplishments, and instructions. Also being able to write in Japanese will promote further correspondence with the Japanese people I encounter in the future. Documentation: I will be using my blog at www.reclusemoose.com. Every week I’ll post the Kanji that I will be studying to keep track of my progress. Once a month I’ll make up some example sentences in Japanese using the Kanji that I’ve learned. Alongside the EDGE project there will also be posts in relation to my various activities in Japan. |
