The famous Kamakura giant Buddha statue (Kamakura Daibutsu, 鎌倉大仏) is at the Buddhist Temple Kōtoku-in (高徳院). Admission to Kōtoku-in is 200 yen per adult. Visitors can also go inside the Buddha statue for an additional 20 yen.
Originally the Buddha at Kōtoku-in was made out of wood in 1243. The wooden Buddha only survived five years until a storm destroyed it. Around the year 1252 the wooden Buddha was replaced by this bronze statue; which in the beginning was gilded. There were many halls erected which housed the original and current Buddha statue, but storms and a tsunami destroyed them all. Since September 20, 1498 the bronze Buddha has remained out in the open. Found this store called Ferret World by Tetsugakudo Park in Nakano.
It was late at night and all the ferrets were in their cages. There was a playpen layed out in the middle of the floor so my guess is that earlier in the day guests can play with them; part of the playpen can be seen in the background of this photo. |
