The famous Kamakura giant Buddha statue (Kamakura Daibutsu, 鎌倉大仏) is at the Buddhist Temple Kōtoku-in (高徳院). Admission to Kōtoku-in is 200 yen per adult. Visitors can also go inside the Buddha statue for an additional 20 yen.
Originally the Buddha at Kōtoku-in was made out of wood in 1243. The wooden Buddha only survived five years until a storm destroyed it. Around the year 1252 the wooden Buddha was replaced by this bronze statue; which in the beginning was gilded. There were many halls erected which housed the original and current Buddha statue, but storms and a tsunami destroyed them all. Since September 20, 1498 the bronze Buddha has remained out in the open. |
